Access all PICS ever made ...

  ... back from nepal ...

... it is 2 weeks now that I am back from vacation, but there are no pictures on the webpage yet. The problem is that I never had to go through 1.25GB of pics and it scares me so much that I haven't even started!! It's a boring sunday today and I have the choice between doing the pics and cleaning the appartment - so I think I go with the first :)

  ... ouff - what a weekend ...

... last friday I had finally my defense. For the really interested ones, there is a 2h video here and here. Even though I was nervous like never before in my life all went fine - therefore I got this hat and a weekend full of paady :o) some photos will follow over the next week ...

  ... championate swiss en surprise

... I had to write a report for the club on that, so I recycle it here :o)

12.5.
Not really well trained, but in good moods (somebody had cleaned the boat for us - thanks Rob?!) we left Versoix with the New Surprise around midday. Unfortunately, we couldn't use the transfer of the boat for some more training because - surprise! - there was no wind. Instead it rained cats and dogs.

13.5.
The first day of the competition went pretty good for us. It wasn't starting before midday (.. so we could get some good sleep), we had only low winds (.. good for untrained crews and not too tiring) and it wasn't raining (.. still I wasn't regretting my ski underwear). Maybe that's why it happened that to our and everybody else's surprise we ended up on a 21st place!

14.5
The fair winds and luck of the 1st day shouldn't last for the 2nd. First race, we were on a glorious 10th something position, was canceled (.. mean tongs say due to a too good position of a YCC boat ;o). Too bad, but well regatta goes on. The next two races we failed completely .. due to maneuver errors and miscommunication, in sum all that can go wrong in an untrained crew. For the last race we had put our selves together, we finished with plenty of boats behind us (it's a great feeling by the way!). But then again our bad luck of this day kicks in: OCS. Which means protest of the racing comity for starting too early - disqualified ... buhu

15.5.
The 3rd day was starting as bad as the last ended. Even before we went on the water ... Thierry, our skipper, without whom we wouldn't win a thing, was sick - food poisoning from last night's dinner. Till we arrive (quite late anyway - the skipper had to puke again) we weren't sure that we can continue the competition. Adding to our misery was the bise on the lake (in gusts up to 25 knots) and the fact that we haven't had a fog on board because the gauging guy said we wouldn't need it (He stated something like 'The championship is no kindergarten!' - Guess what? Most of the others, including the leading ones, had a fog ..). Well, as if by miracle we managed to race all four races of the day achieving mostly good ranks in the middle of the field. Though the strong wind was causing some stress, errors and shouting on board, I, for my part, had quite some fun sailing in these tough conditions. Needless to say, we were all pretty much wrung out after that.

16.5.
Getting out of bed that morning was nearly impossible - sore muscles everywhere, bruises too, especially the knees. Luckily, it was the last day of the regatta AND there was no wind at all. So we hung around in the port till 11h, then the comity decided to give it a go for another race, the race was canceled in the second round due to the drop of wind to zero - good for us and our ranking because we really screwed that one.

In the end we finished 27th of 35 boats, we could have done better but also a lot worse! After 4 exhausting days of racing, I can only say that it was worth it, I learned a lot, I'd do it any time again. Thanks to the crew - especially Thierry for all the preparative works and organization and for not even going down with food poisoning. A huge thanks to Rob too for all the advice and help ...

  ... Screw the iphone ...

... here s what I prefer (because without internet everywhere we dont want to live anymore right?): the nokia n900, a sweet smart phone running unix based Maemo, gps, wifi, camera and it cooks even coffee ;o)

  ... KIDS ...

... during my last weeks 10-years-out-of-school party I was pleased to see that Germans will not die out any time soon. Many of my age are really hard-working to start a family and/or reproduce ... thats what Germany needs :o)
Knowing that I feel now much better in not doing it! I stay with kids that I can return as for example Melina (ca. 3y) and Moritz (7we) ... real cuties no?

  ... do-it-yourself-chilli ...

... after a long period of laziness, here something I'm really happy about. An office mate gave me in spring a tiny chilli plant. I've put it on our small balcony, gave it some water, bugged my flat mates to water it while I wasn't there and ... tatataaaa ... now it has a lot of flowers and fruits started to grow. If they're really hot Robert is getting definitly one - for his next chilli flash :o)

  ... incredible speed! ...

... after enough complaining and with a heap of motivation I finally - after a year or so - took care of the slow loading of the image thumbnails (which were generated on the fly ... haha more on the slow I guess). Well enjoy!

... de chauleur en froid ...

... one week after I came back from down under (pics are available now) I went to Anzere in the Valais for a winter school. Some courses in the morning, whole afternoon snowboarding and then some more courses in the evening ... long days but you dont complain about paid ski holidays ;o) Welcome winter!
... which will include again a week Caprices festival in Crans Montana *juhu*

  ... fermature de site d artamis ...

... well this is the next victim of genevas recent politics. They are turning the capital of squatters and alternative life style into just another place-with-too-many-people-that-have-too-much-money. After the vacation of site d artamis begin of september they have nearly completed their mission ... Geneva wont be the same afterwards, and I think it is losing a lot!

  ... 10 cities, 16 friends, 2.261 kilometers, 2.5 weeks ...

... 6 trains, 5 mfgs, 2 birthday parties, 1 picnic, many Alt, Kölsch, Jever, Tannenzäple, Original 5.0, Lübzer and also some Caipis, 2 television towers, 3 cathedrals, 2 cycling tours, 3 frontiers, plenty of sight seeing in general, some parties till late, 2 beach bars, 6 movies and a lot of fun!
Thereafter I added a week Norway for relaxing and that was basically what I did in July :o)

  ... Skate nights recommence

... summer is finally there - the skate nights have again started to take over Geneva's streets once a month. Now I only need new inline skates, since mine (14 years old relics!) surprisingly broke down. So for the first night I tried Joelles roller-skates, which aren't that easy to handle - I stick to inliners I guess! ... on the search I realized again that Geneva is far off being a big city: if you are lucky enough to find a shop who has K2's they don't have it in your size, promised! Now I ordered my favs on the Internet - pls make that they fit!

  ... Jette les griffes

... for 3 long winters they warmed my feets, made people laugh and wonder and even scared neighbours when I went with them in the cellar to do my washing. Now the hot season starts and I let them go with a heavy heart *buhu* ... it's too sad! But well, basically the soles were one big hole and I found pieces of them all over the appartment ... still I will miss you a lot my dragon clogs :o(

... Any Black Holes at the CERN?

... I was shocked - probably as everybody of us - to read in last weeks news that the world will soon come to an end, if the new play ground for Cern nerds, the LHC, will be finally started after years of construction with the help (mostly money I guess ...) from many countries among them the USA. The latter one got just sued for doing so by two of their brightest minds (well, hope this is not true ;) - the guys at Cern assured today the doubtful masses that its all bull shit ... they'll only play a bit with neutrinos, positrons and other little stuff to solve the mysteries of the universe. But if contrary to all expectations something bad will happen, I know who dies first: the poor sheep's on the Cern grounds ... les pauvres!

  ... Caprice festival ...

... in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, which is normally a snobby ski station. But once a year it's festival time! Though it is not outdoor, it feels almost like a normal festival. Thanks to a labyrinth of tents, buildings and tunnels in between it's dry and warm everywhere, you have a lot of stages, people - partying, drinking and smoking (hehe...). The program was far from perfect, but hey I didn't payed the entrance ...

I worked with a funny crowd behind one of the bars for 4 nights + partying + snowboarding ... bref, I was a little destroyed after these holidays, but no regrets :o)

... Nouvelle an, nouveaux choses ...

... yeah, I was lucky (and tough?) enough to go ice diving! Except from being pretty cold it was also pretty much fun. It's just not this easy to control you and your movements under water while you also just want to look around full of amazement. But maybe in spring I'll try again some normal diving to figure this out ...

... Amsterdam, pass op Ik kom ...

... no idea if this is any good dutch, but I just started learning that really funny language. Hopefully I can get a good base before mid of november ... cause then I'll have plenty of chances to practice on-site in the flat land. The countdown has started: in 11 lections of dutch or 4 weeks I'll take off for a short term change of scene.

... couch surfing avec le departement

... in Fribourg. Donn found a very cool place to stay for Eniko, himself and me on www.couchsurfing.com (I'm hospitalitycluber but it's the same) for the night we stayed in Fribourg to attend a workshop. We had a delicious dinner, bowling, too many beers and a sight seeing tour inclusive ... well, we had fun as can be seen on the pics :o)

  ... polemique autour les moutons

... well, this nice piece conceived by some not so bright mind of the UDC - guess what, the strongest right wing party in Switzerland - got a good kick into the swiss election campaign. Normally it's like everything over here: contemplative, easy-going, unexciting .... But this year one poster (which is by now withdrawn by the UDC officials) changed all: first it entailed a discussion of how right a mainstream right wing party is allowed to be.
This is the omni-present discussion of the last weeks ... which highlighted in the chaos day of Bern last Saturday. During a peaceful demonstration march against the UDC some hundred left wing radicals started a street battle with some other hundred surprised and overstrained (probably because this is the first incident like this in swiss history!) cops. And guess what is the answer of the swiss politicians: they (mostly the right wing, but not only ...) propose to solve the problem by cutting back the right of demonstration which forbids demonstration marchs and allows only static demonstrations, cause those are easier to controll by the police forces - what a great idea!

... pas une propre festival cette annee

... which means not that I didnt enjoyed the Paleo Festival in Nyon. The headliner Bjoerk was just breath taking!

But unfortunatly I will not make it to one of Germanys big rock festivals this year, which was the last years a beloved annual tradition: one outdoor weekend of concerts, camping, good german beer in the company of funny ex-Ilmenau students as I am myself. Well have fun guys, hope I can join next year again!

... fin de mon premier annee

... yeah, time is running as usual. My first year in Geneva is already gone. And punctual for this anniversary I have been the last weeks at 2 (crappy? - well they accepted my paper!) workshops to present my completely prelimary work. The experience has been ambivalent, but this round is done and next time I have hopefully enough points to play with the big ones ....

  ... le cobaye

... another side effect of being at university is that you can sometimes give - in a very practical way - something back to science: help your colleagues with their experiments by let them do weird stuff with you. This one was really funny, I have seen me thinking. They measured with this bizarre hat of diodes (with gel underneath!) the activity of the brain, kind of the more you think the bigger the amplitudes - it felt funny that someone is trying to guess what you think or in this case feel ...

... hospitalite, Guinness et la tromperie de la nouvelle monde

... just came back yesterday from Dublin, it was full of interesting experiences. After the meeting I moved with my sleeping bag to Gerard, an entertaining, pint-loving musician from Ireland, whom I met on HC (hospitalityclub.org) and was so nice to let me crash on his couch. Furthermore his friend Ray showed me that I am not at all talented for playing guitare, later we went to an electro-rock concert in downtown ... I really enjoyed this city, home of the delicious Guinness. And even the couch was not as unconvenient as promised ;o)
Another thing that I had to realize is that the *new world* is really just a copy of old Europe: I found the Porterhouse (I heard there are even 2) and the Govindas in Dublin, which where amongst others my favourite places in Sydney for going out. Well, so maybe it is good to stay in Europe and see the originals ...

  ... ATTENTIONE! epave nerveuse

Oui ... the day is there. Today I woke up with the nearly third throat infection this year, yesterday i didnt liked my papers smelling from cigarettes, my tabaco is empty anyways ... and so I spontaneously stopped smocking this morning.
So far so good, for now at least no cravings - my throat still hurts - so I should better have a plan for the moment this is over. I still have this Stop-smocking book from Allen Carr, unfortunately it is in french ... well so I can kill two birds with one stone!

Allright, here comes the official count: days (1) cigarettes (0) ... sport cigarettes dont count ;)

... une nuit de cours francais

and thats then how our kitchen board looks like!
The best way to learn some french is hence a cooking evening with crazy french guys - one of them not fluent in english, a lot of wine and a board for explanations, bizarre paintings to clarify (or sometimes not) words meanings or just to help the only two native french speakers of the evening to get clear about their grammar since they are mostly divided about this, which is not helpfull for learning, but funny to watch ... all in all I think I can state that it s getting better with my french. I even understood (mostly) my french snowboard teacher yesterday!

  ... nouvelle annee, nouvelle camera

... and a little trick that spiegel.de was telling the interested reader: HDR - high dynamic range pictures are made out of several pictures, one overexposed, one normal and one underexposed. Afterwards a bit of tonemapping and finished is a little masterpiece. Well, for a non-professional like me there are still some problems to handle ... e.g. here you see a pic where the alignment didnt fit - but still I like it for some reason, looks like a piece of modern art ;).
Some more HDRs, some fitting ones, you can find at the picture site.

... which means basically that I finished another part of the access-all-pics-ever-made story. So now you can browse the images by their days (or somewhere around this date) of creation. If the thumbnails seem not proper try a reload ;). So half way through now ... we ll see when I have time to do the rest inbetween all the other stuff that is planned for the next time.

  ... la neige arrivant

Finally here in Geneva it stopped to feel like to much Global Warming - the snow arrived while was still enjoying the italien sun. And so all requirements are now fulfilled to have a pleasant weekend in the mountains and to go for a ride ... I try hard to come back in one piece ;0)

... de nouveau plus seule dans Eduard Racine

It's really sad - my beloved neighbour on the opposite side of street and workmate, also known as the funny Canadian, moved last week to Carouge - so quite a while away from Servette. Hehe ... I will miss the delicious pan-cakes and the funny evenings in les grottes, even though I'm sure the latter will occur again because it's just too entertaining ;)

And YES ... my next business trip is in a nicer place: in 2 weeks I'm going to Pisa, in nearly summerly temperatured Italy ... *strike*

... manquer le fondue et finir l'attente

Yes ... long loading times for my website are over! I found a (pretty easy) way to generate some thumnails and further more I managed to rework my hack a bit for more efficiency in loading. I hope you all appreciate this ;)

The pic is from a fondue the guys made at the terasse of uni Dufour (my working place) just while I attended a boring meeting in Sheffield (close to Nottingham, middle of nowhere!). Well I hope the next business trips will head me to nicer locations ... I guess the boredom will stay anyway.

hola - since my web stuff is working again, the Locality part is now uploaded *juhu* - but unfortunatly at the moment still without real thumbnails, which can turn out as pretty annoying with this whole lot of pics.
Anyway, still I'm happy to present you all my pics ever published on my websites sorted by its shooting location. Have fun ...

... Feldschlösschen supprime 26 emplois en Suisse (12:30)

Since this was not the first time today I have seen funny headlines like this in one of the most renowned suisse newspaper Le Temps I have to express here my amazement about it: Feldschlösschen ( ... by the way a not recommendable beer but unfortunatly here quite common!) dumped 26 employees.
Not hundreds or thousands - no just 26 - in the whole Suisse! Holala ... that is really sneaking, but compared to the articles you find in german newspapers (Airbus is dumping 1000 externals) this is just hilarious.

  ... mon debut des grimper

Well ... seems that I have a new hobby
Yes, I got me some climbing shoes after I was infected by all those climbing guys here around me when they lugged me to the Artamis (Bouldering cave!) 2 weeks ago. And last weekend we used the nice autumn sun to climb outdoor somewhere in France - as proof the picture besides. And there are more to come, the next days when Im not too lazy or busy or even both ...

 and his nicest picture!

Normally Julien tries to be more normal, but especially in winter and snowboard time he not always succeeds. I will hopefully see this live once the season has started and we go riding in the nice mountains surrounding Geneva and the Lac Leman as often as possible :)
